Splurge or Steal {You Lucky Dog, Staffordshire Dogs}

Granny Chic is in full force.
Vintage finds are popping up everywhere.
Once called ultra-Traditional or maybe even stuffy,
these Spaniel figurines, Staffordshire Dogs,
 are mainstream mantle mutts, once again.

note: if Staffordshire Dogs aren't your breed, be sure to come back next Monday for a FOO DOG SPLURGE OR STEAL and round up!!!

So, if you've inherited a Staffordshire set from Grandma (break them out of storage).  And if you've been looking for a set to call your own, check out the difference between a costly antique and a reproduction that you can score for a fraction of the price.
And by the way, which do you prefer?

*I, personally, can not verify that the One Kings Lane "SPLURGE" Antiques are in fact Antiques based upon the pictures on-line. One Kings Lane prides itself on having dealers with integrity and stands by their claim of Vintage or Antique.

**Buyer Beware: Surprise! Not all people who sell "antiques" either know what they're selling or are honest about what they're selling. The reproductions of Staffordshire Dogs are quite similar (as seen in all of the STEAL examples above) to the originals, to the inexperienced eye. If you don't know what you are looking for or looking at, make sure you seek out a reputable local dealer, or only use online dealers that have excellent reputations AND excellent return policies. For more on how to spot the difference between a valid antique and a reproduction check out this fabulously detailed article, from a fantastic source for antique lovers, "Real or Repro" . Because fakes aren't bad, as long as they are being sold as reproductions and you know what you are buying.

  1. I adore a Staffordshire dog (or two). Of course vintage is always preferred, but Anthropologie's take on the cookie jar is adorable. I can't wait to see your Foo dog splurge or steal next week!

  2. My grandmother-in-law offered me two white ones in 2000 and I turned her down. I asked if I could have them a few months later and it was too late. I've been kicking myself for the past 14 years over that!
